Hitchin Counselling & Psychology

We provide high-quality in-person counselling, psychotherapy and psychological therapies in a confidential and supportive environment from our practice in the centre of Hitchin.

Deciding to begin therapy can feel difficult and may bring up feelings of anxiety or uncertainty. Many people find, however, that when they work with a therapist they feel safe and comfortable with, therapy can become a deeply supportive and rewarding process, offering space for reflection, understanding and lasting change.

Hitchin Counselling & Psychology is a group practice made up of highly qualified and experienced professionals, offering a comprehensive range of therapeutic services. We are fully insured, DBS checked, and affiliated with recognised professional bodies that set and regulate the ethical and professional standards within which we work.

What we offer

We provide counselling and psychotherapy for adults and young people over the age of 13 who may be experiencing a wide range of emotional, psychological and relational difficulties. People come to therapy for many different reasons — some with clearly defined concerns, others with a more general sense that something is not feeling right. Our work offers a supportive and confidential space to explore these experiences at a pace that feels manageable.

We work with individuals and couples facing difficulties such as anxiety, depression, stress, relationship concerns, trauma, bereavement, issues of identity and belonging, challenges around work or life transitions, and problems affecting self-esteem or confidence. We also support children and young people with emotional and behavioural difficulties, adapting our approach to suit their developmental needs.

We welcome people from a wide range of cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds, and work in an affirmative way with gender, sexuality and identity diversity. Our therapists draw on a range of therapeutic approaches, allowing the work to be tailored to each individual’s circumstances, rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

Who’s who in mental health care?

Psychiatrist

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who specialises in mental health. Psychiatrists are trained to understand mental health difficulties primarily from a medical and biological perspective. They are qualified to prescribe medication and may recommend medical treatments such as antidepressants or other psychiatric medicines as part of care. In the UK, psychiatrists often work within the NHS or private medical services and may work alongside therapists rather than providing talking therapy themselves.

Psychologist

Psychology is the scientific study of how people think, feel, behave and relate to others. Psychologists are trained in psychological theory and research methods, and use this knowledge to understand emotional and mental health difficulties. Some psychologists work primarily in research or assessment, while others provide psychological therapies, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), within clinical settings.

Psychotherapist

Psychotherapists are trained in one or more recognised therapeutic approaches and use talking therapies to help people explore emotional difficulties, patterns of relating, and life experiences. Approaches may include psychodynamic psychotherapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), EMDR, or other evidence-based models. Therapy may be short-term or longer-term, depending on individual needs.

Counsellor

The term counsellor is often used interchangeably with psychotherapist in the UK. Counsellors are trained to offer talking therapies in a supportive and confidential setting, helping people reflect on their experiences, emotions, and relationships. Training backgrounds and therapeutic approaches can vary.
